My annual occasion of procuring fresh, live soft shell crabs and eating them. I just went a grabbed a box for a small dinner party we are having in my best friends back yard. So in case you didn’t know how to rock these things out like a boss, here you go.

cut the faces off

Kinja'd!!!

bread them

Kinja'd!!!

fry them (tonight I am using a real deal deep fryer though)

Kinja'd!!!

flip them

Kinja'd!!!

pleace on toast with mayo and one slice of crisp lettuce - serve with fries! DONE

Kinja'd!!!

You will not be disappointed unless you hate eating crab! Enjoy - they are only available frozen whenever, or live once a year for roughly a week up in Maine. I think the season in Maryland is longer.

Does the shell become sorta crispy when you fry them? I must try this.

I need more details on this. What kind of soft shell? What are you using as you batter?

Living in a land locked state and loving seafood stinks.

really close, the maryland border is like 30 or so miles north of me. Still takes a hell of a long time though due to the bridge connecting Virginia to maryland

The way we treat seafood, holy shit (had a conversation about it while eating clams). I don’t know how much longer it can be legal with PETA and and oversensitives and all. People get prison time for chaining a dog up outside or putting them down without going to the vet, yet throw a live shellfish into a boiling pot without batting an eye. Enjoy it while you can, I’m not sure how much longer it’ll last.

Also, what does it look like when you bite into it? Does it still look like organs, or does it look like something that you might actually want to eat?

Kinja'd!!!1

So you don’t gut them or anything? I would imagine once you get close to the poo-chute area, you’d probably encounter a couple off putting bites.

lol I remember living in CO and fish was TERRIBLE out there. And expensive as all get out. Here in a fishing town, I go in to the place on the pier and see all this and it is glorious. A bunch of it right off the boat too.

For batter I just use flour with some salt, pepper and old bay. The crabs are got right after they molt and before they grow an new shell

nope, hence the name “soft shell”. It is totally soft, before they start making the shell hard, hence the VERY short season for us to get them

I can probably do that, actually. I’ll let you know. I have liquor store connections. When I first moved out here, a buddy of mine sent me food from my favorite Vietnamese place in Boston along with a picture of the restaurant to look at while I ate.
